at Cervantes Institute Cairo: theatre, music and photography mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

The Cervantes Institute in Cairo, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic, will mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Tuesday, 25 November, at 6:30 p.m. at the Institute’s premises in Cairo. The event is open to the public; admission is free until capacity is reached.
The programme features Natalia Winder Rossi, UNICEF Representative in Egypt, on protecting girls and safeguarding children’s rights in Egyptian society, alongside Solange Alvarado, Director of the Centre for Attention to Survivors of Violence at the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Dominican Republic, who will address women’s resistance to violence and spotlight leading figures in the field.
The evening includes a performance of “Las Bernardas” and a photography exhibition showcasing women from the participating countries—Cuba, Bolivia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay—symbolising resistance and resilience in the face of gender-based violence.
An artistic segment will bring together music and dance, with oud by Marwan Elgamal and guitar by Ahmed Meligy, and a dance performance by Nada Omar and Toka Emad.
The event coincides with the anniversary of the assassination of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic, who became global symbols of resistance to oppression and violence. On 25 November 1960, the sisters were murdered for their political opposition to the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo (1930–1961). In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 25 November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in their honour.
